The artistry of early television sets

When you look at your plain back slab of a flat screen TV it’s marvellous to think that such a thin piece of technology could be able to provide us with the incredible sound and vision that it does. Every day it hosts TV and games consoles and provides an incredible work of entertainment. Many can host the internet as well. You still need to have a decent television aerial though and that’s why you will need the services of a TV aerial installation Cheltenham based company like the one highlighted here. Most televisions are now run on a projection basis but before this a large cathode ray device was needed and the whole thing was box shaped. To make early television attractive to potential buyers, designers came up with some beautiful designs to make the television set look like a part of the furniture in a 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s home.

The earliest sets were housed in record, gramophone and radio units. These were early entertainment systems that were a complete purchase for the home. At the time the radio and record player were the most used elements of the unit.

These were made primarily of polished wood and the examples from the 1930s are very art deco with ornate wood work and engravings in the front. Some are contained within an actual cabinet that could be shut away if polite company came round. With the introduction of plastic like bakelite the sets became bigger and more futuristic.
