Carers to Get Funded Fair Play Agreement
The UK government has pledged a landmark £500 million investment to launch the first ever Fair Pay Agreement for adult social care workers in England.
What Is Its Aim?
Announced by the Health Secretary Wes Streeting, the funding is aimed at boosting pay and improving working conditions for care workers, who have been lowly paid. To deliver the plan, a new body combining trade unions and employers, the Adult Social Care Negotiating Body, will come into effect in 2026 to negotiate pay terms.

Carers Trust Has Welcomed the Announcement
The Director of Policy, Dominic King-Carter, urged that funding must reach the frontline. He emphasised that voluntary-sector providers, including local carer organisations, should benefit fully, and warned that although the money is welcome, the pay rise may not arrive until 2028. However, some organisations representing care providers have raised doubts. The Care Provider Alliance warned that, given the scale of the workforce and existing funding pressures, the £500 million could be spread too thinly to make a major difference. Similarly, analysts have described the plan as a ‘bear trap’, noting that the agreement relies on money already allocated in future budgets rather than new spending.
