Understanding Road Tax for Vans
Road tax – also known as Vehicle Excise Duty – Is applicable to every vehicle on the roads of the UK, including vans. Anyone can check whether a vehicle is correctly taxed or SORN (off-road) by using the DVLA website.
Being registered as the owner of an untaxed vehicle, keeping an untaxed vehicle or using an untaxed vehicle are all offences with legal consequences. The DVLA may issue a fine or remove and dispose of your vehicle.
Road Tax
For vans, road tax applies to any light commercial vehicle (LCV) weighing up to 3,500kg. This includes pick-up vehicles. The vehicle V5C document can confirm eligibility.
All LCVs have a European classification of N1. This means that they are vehicles designed to carry goods and that they are light-duty passenger vans.
Road tax for LCVs is a flat yearly rate, running for a 12-month period from April to March. This is payable to the DVLA via the government website. If you sell your vehicle during this time, your road tax will be cancelled, and a part refund made.
Slight variations in cost may apply depending on the van’s year of manufacture and engine size. This applies to some older models of Euro 4 and Euro 5 category vans.
Vans that are 100% electric are exempt from road tax. This does not include hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. Vans produced before January 1982 are also exempt, as well as those used by a disabled person.
