Alternative sources of power

Fossil fuels have brought unprecedented development to the Western world. The Industrial Revolution from the 1800s onwards was a colossal change that meant a shift in how we worked, lived and moved around. Unfortunately, the thing that fuelled this change was two of the most dangerous and damaging long-term items ever to be discovered. This was oil, gas and coal. Automobiles, Airplanes, the heating in our homes, the electricity that powers the devices we use and the lights within it are all taken from a source that may well be destroying the planet or, at the very least, be changing it to the point where it makes the Earth uninhabitable for humans.

The answer is clear. We cannot continue in this vein. The challenge to find a new source of energy provision that we all contribute to is not just a task, it’s a duty. It’s one of the greatest tasks this generation has, and the urgency is palpable. While the previous generations were focused on going further and faster, we are now faced with the imperative of slowing down and rethinking our lives for the sake of our planet’s survival.

Renewable energy that does not require something to be burnt is the key. Cold fusion is the ultimate goal, but it is centuries away. Until this technology is discovered, we should look to sources such as Nuclear (much safer than it was), Wind, wave and finally Solar. Solar energy is one of the quickest ways to achieve this, as we can all have some fitted onto our homes.
